A Night at the Musicals

We are excited to announce a brand new vocal opportunity for students in partnership with the Royal Marines Band Service and Portsmouth Grammar School. This brand new performance is aimed at primarily KS3 - 5 students, however confident Year 5/6s can get involved.

 This massed choir performance with the Royal Marines Band Service taking place on Thursday 6th July 2023 at Portsmouth Guildhall, at 6:30pm, celebrating some of the most popular and well-known musical theatre songs.

The performance is an opportunity for students to sing as part of a massed choir as well as opportunities for solo performers accompanied by the Royal Marines Band Service. The performance will include songs from hit musicals, such as The Greatest Show, Dear Evan Hanson and School of Rock.

What do Schools have to do?

  • Teach all community songs prior to the performance

  • Attend joint in-school rehearsals in June

  • Attend rehearsal on the day of the performance in July

Solo Opportunities

There are solo opportunities for KS3 - 5 students in the following songs. If you have a student/students are interested in performing a solo, they will be required to submit an audition video, as detailed below.

Any gender may be considered for any solo, vocal ranges have been supplied as a guide only.

Audition Process

Students should submit one video audition for their first choice solo. Students may be considered for alternative solo slots, but this will be at the discretion of the audition panel.

Audition videos should be submitted to portsmouthmusichub@portsmouthcc.gov.uk by Monday 22nd May.

Please note that on this occasion only KS3 - 5 students will be considered for solos.

Solo Selection Criteria

Please note that solo auditions will be reviewed by the follow criteria:

Quality of Singing:

  • Tuning

  • Quality of sound and vocal control

  • Use of dynamics (loud/quiet)

 Performance Skills:

  • Eye contact with conductor

  • Expressions of singing

  • How effectively the performance conveys the meaning of the song

  • Communication with the audience

Tickets

Tickets for this concert will be available to purchase directly through Portsmouth Guildhall Box Office.

Tickets are £15.00 per ticket including a ticket levy and booking fee charged by the venue.
