Key Aims of the Music Service are:
working in partnership with music providers and organisations throughout the region through Portsmouth Music Hub to build a secure foundation for music and music education in Portsmouth
raising attainment in curriculum, instrumental and vocal music
accelerating progress for learners in and through music
supporting all learners to reach their full potential in and through music
improving the climate for learning in and through music
providing opportunities for support and development of talented musicians
developing the professional learning community
nurturing a passion and enjoyment for music that extends into life-long learning and participation
Vision
Working in partnership with schools and Portsmouth Music Hub Partners, the Music Service aims to ensure that every young person and family has access to excellent musical provision, improving outcomes for all. This will be achieved through:
ensuring that all children are reached, including the most vulnerable, through personalised learning approaches that take into account individual starting points and interests thereby increasing enjoyment of school, closing gaps in achievement and ensuring children and young people reach their potential
using information systems to target intervention and support where it is most needed and using data to continually improve the quality of the service delivery
actively seeking, listening and acting on feedback from children, young people, families, schools, staff and members of the community
providing a comprehensive music information, advice and guidance service for children, young people, parents and learners
making an effective and significant contribution to the achievement of the Children and Young People’s Plan, and contributing to the priorities and targets for the City Council and the Local Strategic Partnership
Services
+ Ready 4 Music
Ready 4 Music is Portsmouth Music Hub’s whole-class instrumental and vocal teaching programme.
Schools across the city opt to take part in this programme and Ready 4 Music provides Year 4 classes with weekly instrumental and vocal music lessons led by specialist teachers from Portsmouth Music Service.
The lessons cover the National Curriculum for Music and enable pupils to develop a wide range of musical skills. The Music Service teacher works in partnership with the class teacher and lessons are team-taught.
Portsmouth Music Hub works in partnership with Charanga using these interactive web-based resources to support all learners participating in Ready 4 Music. These resources can be found on the Portsmouth Music Hub interactive site: portsmouthmusicserviceinteractive.co.uk
The range of instruments currently available as part of the Ready 4 Music programme include Trumpet, Cornet, Tenor Horn, Violin, Viola, Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Djembe, Samba and Voice.
Many schools extend the programme into Year 5 and beyond so that children can continue to learn as a whole class after their initial year of learning.
In some schools children opt to continue learning through small-group lessons, joining a school musical ensemble or joining one of Portsmouth Music Hub's ensembles.
+ Music Curriculum and PPA Teaching
Music Curriculum teaching can be purchased through the Service Level Agreement.
The Music Service provided schemes of work based on the school’s resources and curriculum links to teach National Curriculum music in your school.
In addition to the music curriculum, Early Years Music and Movement lessons can be provided designed to cover a range of Early Learning Goals.
During one term, there will be a focus on instrumental learning.
Lessons are guaranteed for thirty three weeks of the academic year.
+ Portsmouth Music Programme
The Portsmouth Music Programme, is continuing to expand with more exciting workshop and festival opportunities for children and young people across the city. Thousands of pupils across Portsmouth have benefitted from these interactive and action-packed music activities. The Programmes have received national acclaim.
Package
The package includes five half-day workshops and three festivals per year.
Workshops
Five half-day class workshops (or two whole days and a half day) run in schools. These are specifically planned to meet the needs of schools and to support the delivery of the Music National Curriculum. It is the school’s responsibility to collect the instruments for each of their workshops throughout the year.

Secondary Schools in Portsmouth can buy in to the Secondary Music Programme. Projects on offer range from Rock School to studio recording, pop academies and bespoke workshops linked to examinations. Please contact the Portsmouth Music Service for further details.
+ Vocal and Instrumental Teaching
Instrumental and vocal lessons generally take place in schools. The majority of lessons take place during the school day, with a few secondary schools opting for lessons at the end of the school day.
In School Lessons
The group size and the duration of the lessons is determined by the school in partnership with the Music Service. Schools opt for teaching through the Service Level Agreement.
Lessons in schools are guaranteed for thirty three weeks of the academic year.
Some schools opt to charge parents on a termly basis. Whilst term lengths vary, some schools charge for eleven sessions per term to spread costs out across the year. This arrangement is at the school’s discretion.

+ CPD Opportunities
Portsmouth Music Hub and Portsmouth Music Service offer a range of CPD Opportunities for schools to purchase through the Service Level Agreement.
Various free CPD opportunities are offered to teachers throuhgout the academic year.
+ Large Scale Events
Portsmouth Music Hub produces a variety of large scale and massed choir events on an annual basis.
These free events offer children and young people from the City to perform at many of the City's prestigious arts venues.
